AstraZeneca's biggest drugmaker plans to launch its own generic versions of its blockbuster heartburn medication, after patents for Nexium and Prilosec expired in Europe.
The new heartburn drug, which was previously known as Nexium, is the first of its kind to be approved in the U. S. and Europe.
Pfizer said on Tuesday it will pay $1 billion to settle claims it illegally acquired the rights to Nexium from AstraZeneca in Europe, where the drug maker is based.
The transaction is likely to be reached after the company announced it would acquire about 4,800 drugs from Nexium, which is the top-selling medication in the U.
Shares in Pfizer fell 8 percent on the New York Stock Exchange in the latest trading.
Shares in the company, which had an earnings per share of $4.50, rose 1.5 percent in the latest trading.

In its filing to the U. court, AstraZeneca claimed Nexium would be cheaper than Prilosec, a drug made by Pfizer.
The company's lawsuit was filed in the U. district court in Delaware. It contends the patents on Nexium expired in 2010, when the FDA rejected the bid, and in 2013, when the FDA rejected a bid to sell generic versions of Prilosec.
Pfizer, which last year said it was buying AstraZeneca to resolve litigation from generic rivals, said the company was not ready to appeal the decision.
In the past, the company has said it would sell its own generic version of Prilosec after the expiration of the patents.
